Law and Artificial Intelligence

Legal, ethical, and regulatory issues of AI

The Hungarian Journal of Legal Studies – Acta Juridica Hungarica (HJLS) invites contributions for a special issue on law and artificial intelligence (AI).[1] The journal serves as a long-standing forum for all topics relevant to Central European legal systems and their change.

Artificial intelligence is a technology that is rapidly and radically changing the world around us. AI helps us to process and understand complex and vast amounts of data in many different areas, such as drug discovery, human speech understanding, legal document interpretation, stock markets prediction, human behaviour regulation, and even in the creative industries. Developments in AI have become essential for the realisation of autonomous vehicles, accurate diagnosis in health care, and for the development of sophisticated language translation technologies.

There are, however, a number of significant problems with the technology which require legal and regulatory responses from states. AI development must secure human-centred and ethical operation, transparency, and respect for fundamental rights. Besides its apparent advantages, AI entails several risks, such as opaque decision-making or being used for criminal purposes. The human factor, the machine learning process in algorithms and automated decision-making, and handling uncertainties may lead to discriminative practices. AI technologies may present new safety risks for users when embedded in products and services. Different legal areas, such as human rights law, criminal law, tort and liability and data protection law, may also need adaptation, as AI is unlikely to leave any area of the law intact.

The journal is especially interested in contributions in the following areas:

  • Current legal frameworks framing the use and development of AI
  • Privacy and data protection law
  • Intellectual Property law
  • Legal tech, AI legal assistance
  • Fundamental rights – human dignity, equal treatment, human enhancement
  • Liability law – liability for autonomous systems, errors in data or decision-making
  • Ethical issues of AI
